Explorer Edition: "In Between Extremes"

There is a popular phrase that “we always want what we currently don´t have” (or something along similar lines 😊)

Questionable how often this is true, but it seems in Chile chances are higher!

Here are two examples…

  1. The just never-ending horizontal rain of Chaitén in Chile´s South (“hey sun, where are you, please?”)

  2. The intense sun boiling down on you in the Atacama Desert (“clouds are what we need!”)

When the journey gets interrupted (will surely bring rain gloves next time..), the body is tired ("mate, how much water you've got left?"), or the road is dusty (for that extra crunch between the teeth), then it is probably natural that we wish for the opposite, or at least something much more pleasant right now!

Why is that? Or do we just love the ‘middle ground’ so much, staying away from the 'extremes'? Talking Chile, that would probably be some sunny 25 degrees with scattered clouds. Pleasant!

Yet, the ‘middle ground’ is not always an option, nor would it make for all the good stories one experiences while going through the 'extremes'.

So maybe it makes sense to pause for a minute (when starting to daydream for something else) and realize that the rain simply belongs to Chaitén. And it was after all the burning sun that has helped to turn the Atacama Desert into the unique place which it is today!

So far, so positive 😊
